History of Verena Fischer Foster

!Verena Fischer was born Aug 17, 1828, in Weiningen, Zurich, Switzerlan d to Jakob and Anna Barbara Schaufelberger Fischer. She was the eldest o f nine children, six of whom died at birth. Her brother Jacob Fischer, wa s six years younger and a brother Henry was twelve years younger than she . Her father was from Hottwel, Switzerland, which was from the other sid e of the County. Johann Jakob Fischer was a shoemaker and ran his own bu siness until his death in 1846, employing four shoemakers. After Jakob di ed, Anna Barbara continued to manage the business for as long as she coul d. Anna Barbara was a gentle, blue eyed woman who tried to keep the fami ly together after her husband’s death. But Verena, the eldest now, had t o go out to work to help the family. Anna Barbara's family had lived i n the town of Weiningen for over three hundred years and many of her peop le are still in that area. They are known for wine production. The town o f Weiningen is still much as it was when Verena was there. The school wh ere Verena went six days a week, all but three days out of the year, unti l she was twelve, and then she attended night school until she was sevent een. The church where she worked as a girl, and the home where she was bo rn, were still in good condition in 1990. The convent where Verena woul d take the shoes to the sisters is still standing out in the countryside . She liked to go to the nunnery as she loved to see the flowers and wa s always happy when the sisters would give her a bouquet to take home.

!Verena liked to dance as did her father and she was seldom permitted t o attend dances with anyone but her father. It was the custom for partne rs to dance all the dances together. Escorts seldom traded dances.

!When she was seventeen years old her father died.

!Verena worked at various jobs which included working at for $25 per yea r for a lady of whom she was very fond. She said that the gifts the lad y gave give her exceeded many times the $25.00. She worked here for tw o years, and then went to work for the sister of her previous employer wh o was the wife of the minister. She remained there for two years but ref used to work there longer because the minister would have her go in fron t of him on Sunday mornings and open the church for services. This dista steful task was one of the things that contributed to her joining the Mor mon Church. She said she would not be in servitude to any man. She the n became a silk weaver, which occupation permitted her to live at home wi th her family. Silk weavers were required to finish a certain amount o f work in a given length of time or receive no pay for it, which often me ant working all night.

!In 1853 Verena joined the Mormon Church and two years later, in 1855, a t the age of 25, she and her girl friend Barbara left Switzerland to com e to Utah. They waited 1n Liverpool for their ship. At this time the Mo rmon church would contract with ships to take the Saints to Utah. It wa s more expensive to go by steamer so most of the Saints came by sail. Ve rena had to wait in St. Louis for an ox team which carried the provision s and luggage. At this time the Church would hire teamsters and wagons t o carry the luggage, provisions and those who couldn't walk. The res t of the pioneers put their provisions on the wagons, and like Verena wal ked all the way from St. Louis to Salt Lake City, arriving in September o f 1855, with the Valantine Company.

!She and her boy friend had planned to meet In Salt Lake City where the y would be married. When he didn't arrive as planned, and thinking he ha d been against her leaving Switzerland, Verena accepted a proposal of mar riage from Peter Hofhines, a polygamist from Germany. She said that afte r the sacrifice she had made in coming to Utah, she didn't want second pl ace in the Kingdom by not living polygamy. When her daughter Ella was bo rn, Peter Hofhines’ first wife, Sarah Ann Mode, was unhappy over the atte ntion that Peter was giving Verena and her baby. Verena decided that sh e would not make problems for Peter and his first wife, so she divorced h im.

!She married George Foster on the 30 November 1858, who was a widower wit h eight children. George was 18 years older than Verena. She and Georg e moved to Provo to the home that he had built near his daughters. Thi s was a difficult situation for Verena to be in. George had been close t o his children, being both mother and father to them since the death of h is first wife, Jane, six years earlier. After arriving in Utah, George h ad already had one unsuccessful marriage in 1856 to Ann Pauling. By th e time Verena married him, all but three of Georges and Jane's children w ere married. George had never quit mourning for the loss of his first wi fe and that was something that Verena had not expected. When George wa s old he would say, “I wonder if the wolves got Jane.” George raised Ver ena’s daughter as his own, and it was not until they were married in th e temple that Ella found out that she was not George's own daughter. The re was never any indication that Ella was not a Foster, and she remaine d such until she died.

!A short time after moving to Provo, Verena's sweetheart heard of her sep aration from her first husband and followed her there, only to find he ha d come too late. He had again lost her. In September 1860, a few days af ter the death of her daughter, Barbara, Verena’s mother and brother, Jaco b, arrived from Switzerland. They had buried Henry, her brother, on th e bank of the Missouri River enroute to Utah. It had been five years af ter Verena departed from Switzerland before her mother received a lette r from her. By that time they believed her to be dead.

!Barbara Schaufelberger Fischer (Verena's Mother) sickened by the hardshi ps of the trip, lived only three weeks after reaching her daughter in Pro vo.

!Although the family was fixed very comfortably in Provo, George wanted t o move to Logan to be close to his older daughters and also friends who h ad moved from Grantsville and Provo to Logan. In 1863 they left their Pr ovo home and moved to Logan, Cache, Utah. Here they had to begin all ove r again. They built a large frame home next to Sarah Foster Blair, Georg e and Janes oldest daughter and her husband. Here they were able to kee p some cows and have a small farm, where they could provide for their nee ds.

!It was while in Logan that Joseph, Matilda Ruth, and Jane were married a nd Verena was now home with her husband and her own growing family. Thi s home was always filled with family and loved ones. They would gather i n Logan to visit or pass through as the large family went about their liv es, traveling over the oceans on missions to the islands and Europe .

!Logan was a growing community at this time and the family being loyal ch urch members, gave whatever they could to support the Church and communit y. Verena knit and sold stockings and gave the proceeds to the tabernacl e fund. She donated all the Sunday eggs to the temple and at one time th ey gave half of all they possessed to the temple fund.

!Verena was a woman of high ideals. She was a very ambitious and devote d wife and mother, a good neighbor, and always gave service where needed . She attended services regularly and loved associating with people. Sh e was an extremely hospitable person, always giving food and shelter to a ll who passed her way.

!In November 1873 the family moved to Whitney, Idaho. They built a three -room log home, dug wells, planted trees, broke ground, and built barns a nd sheds. This was on the homestead that Joseph Foster had developed, bu t then decided to move to Arizona after the death of his wife. It was i n this house that Verena lived until 1890 when she and her son, George Be njamin, built a new frame home just east and north of the original log ho me. It was into this house that George Benjamin brought his new wife, Ru th Woodward Foster, in 1892. Verena moved into a large room on the wes t of the house and George and Ruth lived in the rest of the home until Ve rena died in 1916, at the age of 88.

!At age 68, while her son, George, was on a mission to England, Verena we nt into the barn yard and was in the process of taking a calf from a co w when the cow charged, hooked and trampled her. She received many bruis es and broken bones. Ruth was able to mount a horse and get Verena awa y from the cow. She was able to save her life by continual nursing for t he next three months. Verena was again on her feet and stood and walke d as straight as an arrow and continued to do so until she died. When he r health became poor, she lived a less active life, although until an adv anced age she enjoyed going to church and doing her own shopping.

!It was not easy to live with Verena, as her grandchildren often expresse d. Her health was not good and she would take spells. As with most ol d people, she had her good days and bad days. She needed constant care , and she would stay up all night and wander through the house. The famil y was always afraid that she would set herself on fire with the candle th at she would take with her at night.

!One time she said, ''I wound the clock.” But it was the wick on the oi l lamp, and she had flames going up almost to the ceiling. She was a con stant care and one of the family would have to stay up and watch throug h the transom until she went to sleep. The grandchildren resented the fac t that they couldn't go any place as a family as someone would have to st ay behind to watch Grandma. She said to Ruth, “You can have Lincoln brin g in the water, but not Cecil, as he will either spit in it or pee in it. "

!When Verena was taken for her first automobile ride she looked up and sa w that they were traveling along and exclaimed, "My God, where's the hors es!" When ice cream was first made on the Foster farm Verena put hers i n the oven to warm it up. Even though she was a very forward looking wom an she was not ready for the changes that were coming, such as electric l ights, telephones and other modern trends.

!Verena wouldn't allow her children learn to speak German, her native ton gue, as she would remind them they were American and should speak that la nguage. She always took the German News, and read it daily. She spoke E nglish very well and it was only as she got older that she began using mo re German words.

!She wanted her children to be educated and did all that she could to pro vide for their education, sending them to Logan to finish their schooling .

!Her home was always fu11 of visitors and family as they would come to se e her. A member of the family was present during one of her spells and s ent word to Blackfoot that if the family wanted to see her alive they sho uld come. Those who have been in the old house remember a ha11 where th e front door entered and the stairs went up out of the hall. From the ha ll you could go either into Grandma’s kitchen or into the living room o r dining room. As the family arrived at the front hall. Grandma came do wn the stairs as straight as a poker and seeing them all dressed in blac k said, "That Verena should mind her own business! "

!Verena’s husband had died when she was only sixty years old, leaving he r a widow for 28 years.

!She died at the age of 88 years at the family home in Whitney, Franklin , Idaho, April 29, 1916. She was buried next to her husband George in th e Logan city cemetery, Logan, Cache, Utah.
